What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a blend of different therapies, all attempting to restore the body to health in the most natural way possible. Based on the idea that the body has the innate ability to fight disease, its techniques are non invasive and designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing powers.

Naturopathic practitioners uphold six basic principles: nature has the power to heal, treat the cause-not the effect, treat the whole person, do not harm, prevention is better than cure and act as a teacher.

Naturopathic treatments can include Botanical/Herbal Medicine, Nutritional and Mineral therapy, Homeopathy, and Environmental therapy.

  • Botanical / Western Herbal Medicine - Herbal medicine is a system of natural health care method that uses the therapeutic actions of plants and their constituents to treat a broad range of health conditions. Various kinds of plant material (flowers, fruits, leaves, roots, bark or whole plants) may be used fresh, dried or powdered, as infusions (hot water extractions), or tinctures (alcohol based extractions) to treat or prevent illness and restore the body's balance.
  • Nutritional and Mineral therapy - Nutritional medicine practitioners and naturopaths apply knowledge of the therapeutic and preventive potential of food, diet and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) to maintain and promote clients' health. The naturopath may plan appropriate personal diets and prescribe nutritional supplements for general well being, or to treat clients with specific health conditions.
  • Homeopathy - Homeopathy is based on the principle that substances that are poisonous in large doses can be very beneficial in small doses. Homeopathy is a form of medicine that treats the body as a whole and helps it to heal itself. It can be used for the short term (acute) illnesses and long term (chronic) illnesses. The objective is to prevent the patient from getting the illnesses again (prevention). The name homeopathy comes from the Greek word "homios" which means "like" and the word "pathos" meaning "suffering". Thus homeopathy simply means treating like with like.
  • Environmental therapy & Vega testing - Environmental therapy is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions caused by environmental factors.

Environmental therapists have isolated many substances that cause illness and adverse reactions in people, including chemicals, car exhaust, tobacco smoke, pesticides, drugs, food additives, and common allergens like dust, mould, animal dander, and pollen. Many people may also have allergic and negative reactions to common foods such as dairy products, corn syrup, sugar, wheat, certain fruits and vegetables, nuts, and meat. Exposure to toxic and allergenic substances may exert a cumulative effect on the body, weakening and taxing the immune system over time so that the body becomes hypersensitive (more susceptible) to substances that were once tolerated.

Environmental causes of illness can be identified using modern medical technology such as the Vega Expert testing machine. Vega testing is used world wide and in Australia by Naturopaths, and for many years in European hospitals and throughout Europe by Naturopaths and GP's practicing integrated medicine.

Vega Testing is NOW available at the Optimum Health Centre.

How can Naturopathy help me?

A Naturopathy consultation may include analysis of your medical history, lifestyle, diet, exercise, habits, stress, relationships, sleep patterns, bowel habits and mental and spiritual health. The goal is to find the underlying cause of illness. A naturopath will also assess a patient’s unique situation, paving the way to create optimal health, not to just treat disease.

Naturopathy can be good for symptoms that are incurable through conventional medicine. Without the use of drugs or surgery, naturopathy aims to treat conditions such as: recurrent infections, asthma, arthritis, circulatory disorders, high/low blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders e.g. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, depression and many other health conditions.
